This Sunday, March 25, 2012 Todos Santos will host the first annual Festival del Caballo!  Starting with the Cabalgata, (Parade of Horsemen) leaving Puente la Muela, the large bridge about 10 KM north of Todos Santos, the procession will travel down the highway and finish at the stadium behind the Pemex gas station in town around mid day.

After the group enters the stadium for the Grand Entry the show will start with 3 troops of Escaramuzariders from La Paz and Los Cabos, performing maneuvers at a full gallop in colorful traditional outfits, with the ladies riding side saddle.

Also joining will be performances of trick ropers, dancing horses, alta escuela (highly schooled horses), Cala riders, (reining) and even some comedy!  Demonstrations of forging (iron work with heated metal), feed, supplies and equestrian equipment will also be displayed during the show.  Everyone is welcome to come free of charge to watch, participate and enjoy the event!  Bienvenidos!

The Second annual Ping Pong benefit for A benefit for Proplayas Todos Santos A.C.–the Lifeguard program at Cerritos Beach takes place Saturday morning at Baja Beans in Pescadero. See our earlier post for more details.

Back in the pueblo magico of Todos Santos, The Dave Matthews Blues Band from San Francisco will be playing at the Hotel California Friday night.

Saturday watch the sunset at the Hotel Guaycura SkyBar, then rock with the “Up Skirt Band” starting at 8 pm.

Festival de Cine Todos Santos

Festival de Cine Todos Santos logo, Todos Santos, Baja, MexicoThe 9th annual Festival de Cine Todos Santos will be taking place this year from Thursday, February 23 through Saturday, March 3, in Todos Santos and La Paz, BCS. Opening at the Teatro Manuel Márquez de León, on the plaza, on the 23rd, and will run until the 27th in Todos Santos, before continuing on to La Paz.

CINE PARQUE February 19

Prior to the start of the festival will be Cine Parque at the Parque Los Pinos in Todos Santos on Sunday, February 19th at sundown. The entire town will have the opportunity  to enjoy “Enamorada” (Mexico, 1946) a classic film from the Golden Era of Mexican Cinema starring the Mexican diva of all time, María Félix, and Pedro Armendáriz Sr. In one scene, famed cinematographer, Gabriel Figueroa, focuses ever closer on María Félix ending with a shot of just her eyes—an iconic and beautiful image.

OPENING NIGHT, February 23

The opening night film will be “La Lección de Pintura”/“The Painting Lesson” 2011 (Chile/Mexico) Director Pablo Perelman.

In 1960 Chile, a peasant son of a single, teenage mother, shows a prodigious talent for painting. He is discovered by a drugstore owner (Daniel Giménez Cacho) and amateur painter, who tries to make an artist out of the boy, like the artists he sees in his art books. Actor Daniel Giménez Cacho brilliant interpretation of this character, said, “it was nice to do a very tender interpretation of someone who creates his own little theater to live in it.”
From the memories of this old man, comes a story about someone who could have been an artistic genius—a story of the lost innocence that ends in 1973 at the time of the Pinochet coup d’état. The film is based on the novel by artist and writer Adolfo Couve and was awarded with the Audience Award at the 2011 Kerala Film Festival in India.

An after film Academy Awards gala party is this year’s fundraiser benefiting the “Youth in Video” Program. The Oscars will be televised at the event at the legendary Hotel California. Join in the Hollywood glamour, great food and drink, with awards for the best Hollywood costume, Oscar bet “Who are the 2012 Oscar winners?” 50/50 raffle and much more. Tickets are 150 pesos pre-sale / 200 pesos (cash only) at the door and are available at El Tecolote Bookstore and the Hotel California in Todos Santos.

Cover of Festival 2012 issue of Journal del Pacifico, Baja, MexicoThe new Festival issue is being delivered this weekend featuring Jill Logan‘s painting of “María Félix, La Doña” for this year’s Festival de Cine Todos Santos poster. You can view the painting at Galería Logan and place a bid, minimum bid $1,500 USD. All proceeds from this auction support the “Youth In Video” educational program.

This year’s Art Festival will include a parade on Sunday, February 5th, starting at the east entrance to town and traveling to the plaza where it will end with a four hour performance.

The Superbowl also takes place on Sunday, February 5th. You can catch the game at Shut Up Frank’s in Todos Santos.

The 3rd Annual Artist’s Studio Tour takes place February 12, and the 18th Annual Historic House Tour on February 26. Look for our articles in this issue.

The 9th Annual Festival de Cine Todos Santos begins February 23rdin Todos Santos with the opening night film, ‘La Lección de Pintura’(The Painting Lesson) with special guest actor Daniel Gimenez Cacho. February 26th, The Hotel California will host a special Oscar Night party and fundraiser for the “Youth in Video” program of the Film Festival.
