abcs Photographic Dictionary of Sudcalifornia

“ABCS” is a photographic dictionary which strives to spread the culture, the natural environment and identity of Baja California Sur. It contains our everyday words, for example playa, chinolear, maleconear or ¡puchi! ABCS invites photographers to choose one or several of the 900 words which exist in “ABCS” and illustrate them with photos which you have taken.

Anyone from Baja California Sur, México, may participate, including individuals who are not currently residing in the State.
The photo(s) should describe or represent the State of Baja California Sur, its people and activities in everyday context, included in the list of regional vocabulary.

Photos will be accepted only via Web submission in .jpg format from 3 to 10 megabytes, color or black and white. Submissions must not have been previously published. In case of printed photos, they should be scanned following the aforementioned characteristics. Submitted photos may not include any signatures, seals or other form of digital marking. Studio photos will not be eligible or considered by the Selection Committee, nor will photos which have previously won other photo competitions.

Each participant may upload a maximum of two photos per vocabulary term; the number of terms for which one can contribute, is unlimited. Upon close of the submission period, the photos will be selected for publication in the book ABCS, Diccionario Fotográfico de Sudcalifornia.

Hurry! You have only until May 14th to enter your photos!

Todos Santos House and Garden tour

by Victoria Sepulveda
The vibrant community of Todos Santos is looking forward to the return of the popular Home and Garden Tour to be held on Saturday, April 9th. We are excited to share 8 beautiful homes and gardens with docents and owners on the premises to guide you and answer questions. Registration will begin at 10 AM at La Esquina Restaurant north of town (directional arrows will be posted) and shuttle vans will take you to the homes, which will be accessed through moderate walking. Selected restaurants in town will be offering 15 % discount for participants with the tour wristband.

The lovely oasis town of Todos Santos provides a perfect environment to grow a wide variety of plants, from palms to desert species to tropicals. For the garden lover it provides an opportunity to enjoy beautiful gardens and to pick up ideas that may apply your own garden. The new list of homes will be a delight to share since our Baja life style allows us to create unique and truly personal “casas.”

The House and Garden Tour costs $150 pesos. This unique experience is sponsored by Escuela Pacifica, Todos Santos’ SEP certified (Mexican Federal Education System certified) bi-lingual elementary school that offers quality education from second to sixth grade to local children.

EP is attended by both Spanish and English native speakers with a varied level of language abilities. EP’s current student body reflects its mission statement of integrating the community and is composed of 12 Mexican born and three American born students. Teachers Serena Saltzman and Jaqueline Pavia bring years of high quality educational experience to this school, enabling local and foreign born students to create strong bonds and friendships and enhance their life-long educational skills. This non-profit school offers scholarships, sponsorships and work-in-trade programs. For more information, visit their website at: http://www.escuelapacifica.org
